Bo’s: Not Just a Simple Coffee Shop
by Valerie Tort
After more than 10 years of experience in the coffee shop business, Steve Benitez shares his passion and strategies for the successful and ‘just-roasted’ Bo’s Coffee.
The coffee shop race has started a couple of years and espresso-maker machines have been exhausted in making the same product over and over. With so much blended brews in every corner, what’s the difference?
“We do not compete for numbers but we definitely want to be known to be the best at what we do,” he said.
Launched even before the invasion of foreign coffee shops in the country, Bo’s Coffee pioneered the idea of creating a perfect brew of a cozy and warm atmosphere for people from all walks of life.
“Coffee shops are the only place you can go to and be alone. I would just read and write in a coffee shop, and no one would mind me. I loved that experience,” Mr. Benitez said while he recalled his experiences in the several trips to the American and European continent.
The image of the coffee shop evolved a couple of years ago after the massive coffee shops selections in every block. The lonesome vibe and boring (for people who wants company most of the time) coffee experience in a little shop changed into a place where people hangout and chat while sipping their favorite coffee concoction.
Coffee shops are not only places for businessmen or professionals, but also for students and young adults. To spend your lazy afternoons grabbing a cup of coffee is a relaxing thing to do but to spend it with someone else is one-of-a-kind social experience. Java lovers are more of a social clique these days.
As the owner and operator of his dream business, it is more than just serving your targeted customers with better tasting drinks without wrecking their wallets. It is also important to serve your customers with a smile and provide a better coffee blend and faster service than the rest of the coffee shops around the block.
Business strategies and marketing techniques were employed by Mr. Benitez to cultivate his business and to be updated with the trends in coffee preparations.
“The secret to a truly flavorful brew is actually the freshest of the beans and by this, we mean the Bo’s Coffee formula—coffee beans roasted a mere three days before delivery to the stores ready to be transformed into your favorite coffee blends,” he said.
“Bo’s Coffee managed to build its reputation for selling the freshest coffee brew. And when we say fresh coffee, we mean coffee made from just-roasted coffee beans,” the President of Bo’s Coffee said.
Just-roasted coffee beans are consumed within three days after the delivery to ensure the quality of the coffee—sealed aroma and well-kept flavor. Mr. Benitez explained that the coffee’s aroma usually lasts up to seven days after the roasting and grounding of coffee.
After a week, the flavor starts to deteriorate due to the exposure of the grinded coffee with oxygen. Oxygen starts to infuse moisture into the coffee powder; therefore losing the coffee’s unique taste.
The coffee beans used in Bo’s Coffee are harvested from the peaks of Benguet down to the plains of Bukidnon. It is truly a world-class Filipino product that is able to compete with the foreign coffee beans.
His success is a long-time journey that is not achieved overnight. His two-year learning and preparation for the coffee shop business are the toughest part in the creation of his dream enterprise. It started in Cebu way back 1996 and continued to invade different provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao regions such as Leyte, Cagayan de Oro, Bohol, Davao, and Iloilo.
Bo’s Coffee tried to penetrate Manila and it was a huge success. Ten branches are established in Manila and 22 of the franchise and company owned stores are in the provinces over the past years.
Hard work and dedication are his primary investments in Bo’s Coffee, aside from the financial capital expenditures. Preparation and extensive research was done before the launching of its first store in Cebu to ensure of a smooth sailing and profitable business.
In the span of two years, he gained his thorough knowledge in the coffee business by attending several coffee seminars, conventions and trade shows outside the country and examining the different coffee shops in various locations.
In Bo’s Coffee, it is not just selling their ‘just-roasted’ cup of java. It is all about a different kind of experience.
