Tacomio: An Everyday Dose of Entrepreneurial Perseverance

Tacomio - Mexican food Pinoy styleIn the Philippine business arena that is characterised by cutthroat competition and unpredictable economic condition, perseverance will make a business stand out. And inidividual strength and determination will make the entrepreneur stand out the everyday challenges of business.

Leni Adriano, the woman behind Tacomio, spelled these ideas out when she retold to Magnegosyo.com her entrepreneurial story.

Tacomio started as La Salsa, a Mexican snack bar in E. Rodriguez Sr. Ave., in Quezon City. in 1997.

“I wanted to get into the food business thinking it was easy since my husband and I were in property development then. The economy was booming and I wanted a much simpler business. I thought the food business was simple,” Adriano said.

She added that the Philippine fast food business trend, mall popularity, and the development of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transitand (MRT) - made the idea of a food outlet very appealing.

“I was thinking of what kind of food, and realized that there were too many burgers, pizza, ice cream, chicken and dim sum. I was a very small player so I wanted to find a niche market – and I thought Mexican fast food because whatever was ‘in’ in the United States was readily accepted in the Philippines. So La Salsa was born,” Adriano said.

La Salsa started out with P300,000 initial capital for a sit-in place. The company later changed its name to Tacomio when the entrepreneurs reformatted the company in preparation for their entry to the malls.

The Filipino palate soon embraced the Mexican snack. “Taco is the most popular Mexican snack even among Filipinos. Mio means ‘my’ or my taco. Mio also is a derivative of my son Emilio’s name,” Adriano said.

Mexican food is a hit in the PhilippinesShe noted that Tacomio’s first year in business was manifested by birth pains. “It was difficult but gratifying, tiring but inspiring. I knew the business had so much potential from the reaction of our customers. It was very easy for us to have repeat customers and we always got their feedback.”

As mode of expansion to increase market presence and scatter the seeds of entrepreneurial perseverance, Tacomio went into franchising.

“After only three weeks in operation, an executive of a big international chain came in as a customer and was impressed with our menu and set-up. He offered to franchise it right away even if we were not ready yet. That was inspiring and very encouraging,” Adriano said.

Tacomio now counts four company-owned outlets and four franchises – the fruit of entrepreneurial perseverance in Mexican flavor.

Tacomio’s competitive edge is manifested in the entrepreneurs untiring dedication for excellence.

“We do our work well in terms of food quality, cleanliness, service, design, etc. We are fair and we just simply do our best and strive to continuously improve our systems, despite economic downturns. We just continue to persevere and strive everyday,” Adriano said.
