Start Your Beads Business For Less Than P5,000 Capital

Hematite and ceramic bead jewelry setBeads jewelry and accessories are very much a part of today’s fashion trend. Shops and kiosk carrying these products abound in the malls and you will find people checking them out and purchasing a bling or two.

Beads jewelry making is very easy to do as long as you have the artistic flair for it.

But would you know that you can start your own beads business with less than Php5,000 capital?

KC Abalos, a micro-business entrepreneur, did just that. With very small capital on hand she began creating beads jewelry in 2002 as a part-time thing.

It really started as a hobby. “I’ve always been interested in fashion and since accessories are an essential part of expressing your personal style, I decided to get into it,” she said.

Like every fashionable girl her age, she likes to shop and go around malls looking for accessories but often finding them too expensive. “I go around and I can see that there are certain items that are easy to do but they charge so much for a simple design,” she added.

KC realized that it’s very easy to design and make her own accessories. She was able purchase some beads during her trip to Bangkok, since they weren’t enough she went to Quiapo to buy more, cheaper ones.

“Yung first capital ko is around Php2, 500. I shopped in Quiapo for the beads, the screws, locks, strings, and the two simple tools that you need — a small longneck and small pliers.”

From her initial salvo, KC was able to create about a dozen sets that included a pair of earrings, bracelet, and necklace. Aside from that, she also made 10-20 pieces of each individual items.

Her earlier designs used plastic beads and semi-precious stones, so she was able to sell them at a very low price. A complete set would only cost Php250, a pair of earrings for Php20-50, a necklace for Php70-150, and a bracelet for Php50-100.

Her mother acted as her sales person offering the items to her friends, co-workers, and church people. They sold like hot cakes and it was enough to double her initial capital and create more.

Soon she offered her products to a gift shop near where they live in Quezon City. She still supply the shop on consignment basis to this day although she and her mom find that direct selling is more profitable.

Eventually, KC was able to purchase more expensive stones and beads. She now adds jewelry using ceramic beads, hematite, cloth beads, and glass beads to her collection that she sells for Php300-600 per set.

Ceramic painted beads accessories

“I love using ceramic painted ones in my designs. But my best sellers are still the less expensive ones like the twinkle sets. They only cost Php150 and I can sell it in different colors, so when people buy pwede dalawa,” she said.

Her business only profits from word-of-mouth advertising so her clients include friends, relatives, or friends or friends. She posts selected items, though, on the Internet through her Beadle Mania blog where she occasionally get orders as well.

KC maintains that her beads business is still a part-time venture. She works full-time as a writer for a major TV network and teach part-time at the University of the Philippines. Just how much time does she spend making the jewelry?

“When I first started, I would shop on a Saturday then do around 5-10 sets on a Sunday. Ngayon, only when I have extra time like while watching TV or on my leisure time.”

Still she attests that it has been a very profitable business for her. “Yes, it’s very profitable. Because you can really double your initial investment. But of course, this is only supplemental income.”

For now, that is. KC do have plans to take her business to the next level. “I want to take it further but I have to take design courses. Also later, I want to participate in tiangges to sell what i made and other items sana. May mga gusto akong beads na nabibili sa Bangkok or China where they are available and mura lang.”

See how far a small capital will get you? For less that Php5,000 you too can put up your own beads jewelry making business, the only advice KC has for those who want to do so: Come up with your own designs. Be original.

You can check out some of KC’s beads accessories at her online store cum blog, Beadle Mania.

    Hi!

I’ve been interested in beads since i was just a kid and i just got the chance to collect now that i have money to…(I’m not rich nor i earn money because I’m still a student but i manage to save some of my allowance to buy beads) Now, i have a huge collection and decided to use them, make fashionable things and then sell them. My problem is i have the beads but i don’t have the materials (locks, hooks, metal wire, tools, stretchable nylon, etc..) to make jewelries and accessories… do you know shops that sell bead materials at low prices and found either in Manila or Cagayan Valley? Do you also think jewelries and accessories made from recycled materials will hit? I’ll just wait for your reply… thanks!
