Tsinelas and Shoes from Liliw: A shoe industry Photo-Blog

Posted by Sean John in Business News on 14th December 2009
Liliw, Laguna is known for its Shoe/Tsinelas (slippers) Industry

Just a little south of the city of Sta. Cruz in Laguna is the quaint little town of Liliw. Besides the very unique town name, the town is widely known for its thriving shoe industry. Aside from the known shoe mecca of Marikina, Liliw is one of those places where you can just go gaga over shoes and footwear: Liliw has one of the most notable and lively shoe-making industries in Luzon, never mind in the country.
Not a very big draw for the guys, but for women of all ages, this might just be where you encounter “shoe nirvana”. Magnegosyo.com’s resident wanderer and photo guy extraordinaire recently went on one of his excursions down south and visited the town of Liliw, discovering the burgeoning shoe-making industry and actually befriending one shoe entrepreneur in the process.

We don’t do this a lot, so enjoy as we photo blog Liliw and it’s shoe businesses.

If you visit Liliw’s main business street, you would be blind if you didn’t notice all the shoe stores that line the main street. The place is a heaven for shoe lovers — that probably will cater more to the women than the men. But don’t despair, men — there are a lot of stores that sell footwear for guys as well. One of these store’s is PIA FOOTWEAR, one of the hundreds of shoe stores in the main business area.

Owned by Theresa Pia Mistica, PIA FOOTWEAR’s shoes are made in their very own shoe-making factory not far from the town proper. The beauty of these businesses here, Pia agrees, is that because of the relatively low labor costs, most of the business owners are able to sell their goods at reasonably low prices. Their stores, goods, and even their reputation now compete with the urban city of Marikina for shoe buyers’ attentions. While Marikina may have a slight advantage of being so near to the metro, a large number of people — most of which are understandably from the south, but some urbanites as well — travel to Liliw just to sample their products.

It might surprise you — or then again, it might not — that some of the stores in Liliw sell imported shoes from Taiwan, China and Korea. Though the majority of the stores sell locally-made shoes, some still import from the said countries to add more variety to their products. This is not a major concern for the businesses yet, but may soon become an issue if more and more of the stores adopt an importing scheme rather than continue to push for locally-made shoes.

But no matter how the industry evolves, the local government of Liliw is its biggest supporter and endorser. The annual town fiesta revolves around the industry and it is not about to let go of its biggest income generator. Liliw brands are not bound to the town only, some of the Liliw brands even have shoes in the shelves of Metro Manila’s biggest department stores. I’ll leave to you to research which brands they are, but you might be surprised, you might actually be wearing a Liliw-made pair of shoes right now.
If more investors come in and bring in more funds for this industry, no doubt it will be a major asset for the region and indeed the country. So why not visit the Liliw for yourself. Who knows, there might be a good business venture there waiting for you.

    Hi guys,

    Sorry for the late reply.

Let me just re-iterate, this site is NOT the owner of the business we featured in the article — we just featured them and their line of business. THESE ARE NOT OUR PRODUCTS. They belong to a Liliw-based business.

If you really want to research about this business (e.g. starting capital, ROI, and other info), it would be good for you to visit Liliw and see for yourselves. You actually might be doing Liliw a good help if you do so.

Here are the contact details of the said business we featured.

    Info;
    PIA FOOTWEAR
    Brgy Pag-Asa
    Liliw, Laguna
    Owner: Theresa Pia Mistica
    Phone: 0917-510-0421

    Thanks.
