Regine Tolentino’s Boutique & Dance Studio Business

Who would have thought that belly dancing’s most famous icon would indulge in a career close to her heart, aside from show business? In her full 28 years, Regine Tolentino followed a unique pathway after giving birth to her first child, her own baby dress boutique business.
“I began to sew dresses for my child,” she says. “Sometimes, I sew dresses for some kids I know and give these as gifts.” Later on, an idea started to form in her head. Knowing that show business is not that stable as a career, she wanted to share her talents to others.
Regine presented her children’s wear to Rustan’s and the company loved her handiwork. From then on, she began supplying the company with her dresses. It was about seven years ago when she finally gave birth to one of her longtime-dreams.
And so, Regine’s Women’s and Children’s Wear materialized on March 1999, which was later renamed to “Regine’s Boutique.” Her baby dresses finally expanded to include all types of dresses comfortably worn by women and children on everyday and special occasions – wedding gowns, casual, evening and formal wears and even costumes for Disney characters.
Aside from people flocking to her store, she continued supplying her dresses to shops like Rustan’s and Cinderella, to fellow actors and actresses like Charlene Gonzales and Lucy Torres-Gomez, and for costumes of dancers and hosts for such shows like Shall We Dance?, SOP and Eat Bulaga. She also get orders for her dresses from her family, close friends and friends in the industry.
But being Regine, she couldn’t ignore the fact that her feet and legs were starting to pivot and twist again. She always wanted to push that extra mile, and so, she wanted to build a foundation based on her lifestyle. Besides her clothing line, she put up another business last March 2004. And again, it was something very close to her heart – her very own dance studio.
Simply called Regine’s Dance Studio, she teaches jazz, hip-hop, and ballet during her summer workshops. In fact, her own children are even part of her classes. She has several dance professionals working at her studio, teaching ballroom dancing like rhumba, cha-cha, paso doble and jive.
“I’m still trying to learn all of these dances,” Regine says. “I still consider myself an amateur when it comes to ballroom, that’s why I leave it to the professionals to teach them in my studio.”
Like most career women, she also had her shares of ups and downs. Aside from raising capital for her businesses, Regine had to struggle with dishonesty in the workplace, dealing with difficult people, unexpected power interruptions during rehearsals in her dance studio and even natural calamities like flood.
And all of these, she had to endure while under time pressure because of the other side of her work, that of being an actress. But she still manages to pull everything together. With the support and help of her husband, she showed courage and strength for her friends and family by simply not giving up.
“I strive to do better,” she says. “I charge it all to experience. I can’t do all of these without my husband. He helps me solve the problem and he keeps me sane.”
So, with all of these in tow, is there anything else she still wants to achieve for herself?
“I’m very happy with the way things are going for my career and shops,” Regine says. “But I have high goals for myself. I still continue to study. I attend seminars on exporting, business management for textiles and others. I also want to learn new dances like ballroom so that I can teach it in my dance studio.”
For anyone who wants to put up his or her own business, Regine has this to say: “Study every angle of your business carefully – paano mag-pattern or paano mag-count ng finances, paano din mag-budget. Just follow your heart and put up a business that interests you. If you love your work, it’s not work.”
Truly, Regine is not only successful in the showbiz industry but in creating and dancing her way to the hearts of her countrymen. Whenever she sees her clients very much happy with her products, or whenever she is able to enjoy the fruits of her labor, she considers herself successful already.
